THE MUCH loved pelican sculpture that sits on the gateway entrance to the Mullumbimby, can fly again.
Well not really, but it did receive a little TLC with a new wing and a coat of paint, and is now looking mighty fine.
Byron Shire Council’s open space and resource recovery manager, Michael Matthews, said with the support of The Timber Slab Factory and council’s Public Art Panel, the project literally got ‘off the ground’.
“The Timber Slab Factory kindly donated a piece of red cedar and the new wing was carved by Council employee Tino Kraus, and repainted.
“Not afraid of heights, Tino went one-on-one with the Pelican rescue and the bird is now sitting proudly again on the totem pole,” he said.
The pelican sculpture is just one piece of the installation that occupies the small park; the works were a bicentennial project completed in 1988 by a group of local artisans.
