Does Byron Shire Deserve an Operating Theatre?

THE NEW Byron Central Hospital came without an operating theatre. This begs the question, “Do we deserve one?”

We’re not interested in examining the whys and wherefores, or the political motives, behind building a brand new central hospital that leaves the whole of Byron Shire without an operating theatre. Not yet, anyway.

We’re interested in find out whether the community spirit of old is still alive today.

We’re talking the community spirit that raised the money – and conducted the political wrangling – that got the Bay its swimming pool. Its High School.

We’re talking about the community spirit that saved the Recreation Grounds from becoming a new Primary School.

The community spirit that raised hundreds of thousands of dollars to buy equipment for the old hospitals in Shirley Street and Mullumbimby.

Does that community spirit still exist today?

Does Byron Shire have what it takes to put in the hard yards over years to make an operating theatre in our new Byron Central Hospital a reality?
