Tagged Great White Makes Epic Byron-to-NZ-to-Sydney Journey

This is the journey of just one of the great white sharks tagged so far, Shark Nine.

AN ADVENTUROUS juvenile great white shark has gone on an epic journey that has taken her from Byron Bay out to New Zealand and back to Sydney.

Nearly a year after it was first tagged as part of the State Government’s $16 million Shark Management Strategy program, the 2.9m man-eater, known as Shark Nine, has been clocked travelling 10,310km from Ballina down to the cool waters of Bass Straight.

It then crisscrossed the ditch between Australia and New Zealand before it did a figure eight swim back to our shores.

It was last detected 8km south-east off the coast of Australia and 70km from Sydney on April 23.

There have been 37 sharks tagged by Government on the NSW north coast since mid-August last year with the latest three caught, tagged and released using Smart drum line technology off the coast of Coffs Harbour this week.
