Sunday Car Ban for Byron Bay?

BYRON BAY could become a car-free zone on Sundays, if a local councillor has her way.

Byron Shire Councillor Cate Coorey tabled a motion Wednesday 13 December 2017 calling on the council’s traffic committee to draw up plans for a trial.

She says freeing up the town’s CBD for pedestrians would improve the weekend atmosphere.

Cr Coorey says there’s a positive response when traffic restrictions are imposed for special events such as New Year’s Eve.

“If we enable alternative routes and give people lots of warning and set a time frame around it so maybe it goes from 10 until three or something like that, that would be a way to make it work I think without inconveniencing people.”

“I think being on a Sunday when there’s not commuter traffic or school traffic and it’s also time for people to be at leisure and enjoy their town, that’s a good way to make it work.”

People have business to do, crikeys. Hospitality runs 7 days a week!!
You can leave your car home, but don’t tell everyone else what to do.
Fix what needs to be fixed and regulate what needs to be regulated.

Easy to see Cate Coorey doesn’t live in Byron or visit the beach on Sundays.
That’s also reflected in the piss poor condition of the Northern entry to the beach, where we have to navigate the tree roots erosion gutters and sandy rocks to get on to the beach.
The beach area is the best locals meeting place for walking the dog, catching a wave etc and is an icon for visitors, and Cate expects people to walk from Butler St Reserve where they’ve parked all the way to the beach in summer time temperatures.
By the time you get to the beach and back to your car, you’re fried.
God help the elderly residents that enjoy a drive up to the front beach and see the ocean because its only way they can.
This is clearly a way to take the heat off the Mayor who is copping flack over his poorly explained Master Disaster plan to Plaza Johnson St, Byron Street and have us all park and be corralled in the Butler Street Reserve in the sun all day, and paying for the privilege.
Research places like Coffs Harbour or Orange etc where plans like this failed.
