APPLE HAS unexpectedly released a software update, iOS 9.3.5, to combat a massive security breach that appears to have taken the tech company by complete surprise.

An Israeli surveillance company currently referred to as the NSO Group infiltrated the iPhone’s software to extract any of its users’ emails, text messages, contacts, and more.

The University of Toronto’s Citizen Lab found that the NSO Group had developed highly sophisticated technology that sends iPhone users legitimate-looking text messages from companies like Facebook, Google, or the Red Cross.

Inside these text messages were links that, when clicked on, would essentially grant the NSO Group complete access to said phone.

Based on Citizen Lab’s report, it appears that the group was primarily targeting human rights activists and journalists.

Thankfully, Apple has rushed to fix the terrifying hack by releasing the aforementioned software update and it is recommended that you install the update immediately.

How to update your phone now:

You can find the update by going to:

  1. Settings > Click on on General > then click on Software Update > Click Install.
  2. It should be the iOS 9.3.5 update
  3. It should say it is an important security update for your iPhone or iPad and is recommended for all users.
  4. Connect to wifi, hit Download and the Install.

The update will take around an hour.
