Second Hand Saturday Garage Sale Day of the Year

SECOND HAND Saturday on September 23 is set to be the biggest garage sale event of the year.

Byron Shire residents are known as keen garage sale enthusiasts and this year organiser, North East Waste, is expecting more than 1000 garage sales will be held across the North Coast.

Byron Shire Council’s Resource Recovery Education Officer, Lucy Wilson, said families, sporting clubs and community groups use Second Hand Saturday as a day to clean out the cupboards, get rid of the clutter and make a few dollars.

“In the past we have had entire streets hosting garage sales and it’s been a great way to celebrate the amazing sense of community we have in this region,” Ms Wilson said.

“Byron Shire Council is a strong promoter of recycling and garage sales are perfect ways of de-cluttering and saving things going to landfill,” she said.

“The latest Second Hand Economy report commissioned by Gumtree estimates Australian households could be hoarding an estimated $40 billion worth of unwanted items.

“Many people I speak to are often surprised at the amount of things they collect around the house when they are preparing for garage sales and it makes them stop and think about the money that they spend on items they don’t really need,” Ms Wilson said.

People wanting to take part in Second Hand Saturday on the 23 September need to register their garage sale at www.secondhandsaturday.com.au

Registration is free and garage sales will be promoted in local newspapers, online and on the Second Hand Saturday app.

The closing date for registrations is 19 September 2017.
