THE BYRON Bay Community Association has welcomed a state government announcement that there will not be a bus transit centre built on the Butler Street Reserve.
BBCA general manager Paul Spooner has called on the Byron Shire Council to confirm its ongoing commitment to maintaining Butler Street as the site of the iconic markets.
‘Council now needs to confirm that the Butler Street site is the official ongoing site of the iconic Byron Bay Market,’ Mr Spooner said.

Echonetdaily has contacted the council for comment.
It’s understood the State Government decided not to go ahead with building a bus terminal on the site because of the construction costs involved in building on the site, which was a former tip.
Mr Spooner said now the decision had been made, the safety of market patrons, stallholders and market staff ‘is very important moving forward.’
‘The council needs to be totally transparent about any potential ground issues that need to be addressed at the site to make it safe and usable,’ he said.
‘BBCA calls on council to work with market managers, stallholders and the community to ensure that the Butler Street Reserve is an appropriate site for markets and other low key recreational activities to occur into the future.

The main busstop is ok the way it is. There’s room to drive past the parked buses. There are not that many buses a day. Just fix the shelter for the backpackers please. Its an embarrassment in front of visitors.it was backed by a wooden wall and waterproof. It was removed…the backing…because folk story says…that when the parkies hung out behind in the garden…police could drive by and check who was there…with out stopping. Have you ever been there in winter at 6 am 7am wind blowing rain through so there’s no dry shelter to be had. I have. And I was embarrassed in front of visitors. My suggestion has been that buses can drive through the Rails Carpark and a shelter be put backing onto the fence along the rail line. Aligned with the shelter on the platform that’s still there. Its a council park. Its not The Rails’s. Or so I was told when i asked Tom Mooney years ago to fix the BMX track of a car park. He could afford to do it but it wasnt his job. Or a bus station out at red herring Cavanbah Sports Centre. But that would necessitate a lot more movement on the roads from shuttle buses because at the moment a lot of the young people walk from their hostels and airbnbs.as population increases this site is an option as country pple and Sunrise residents catch greyhounds and shuttles too.
