Beth says, “People have been told a rail trail/bike path proposal will protect the rail corridor.

“It’s not true.

“To remove the railway tracks for a bike path it is necessary to pass an act of parliament closing the railway line.

“This means the land becomes Crown reserve and no longer protected as a rail corridor.

“If the funding was provided and the legislation goes through for the 26 km Murwillumbah Rail Trail proposal, the rest of the Casino to Murwillumbah rail corridor is crown land and therefore disposable.”

The Echo article shared by Northern Rivers Railway Action Group says, “A new Railway Action Group will be starting in Murwillumbah at a meeting held on Wednesday at 7pm at the Murwillumbah RSL.”

Northern Rivers Railway Action Group says, “Many people don’t realise that governments have been closing down regional rail for decades, not because it’s a good idea but because of the road lobby.

“They’re spending billions in Sydney on tollways which they then plan to privatise.

“This means more traffic congestion, pollution, accidents etc but they just don’t seem to care.

“This is not just about the Northern Rivers but the whole state.”
