PRESIDENT OF the Byron Bay Boardriders Club, Neil Cameron has publically supported the introduction of shark nets as per NSW Premier Baird’s announcement last week.

“It’s only a matter of time before someone else gets injured, or even worse, gets killed by a shark,” he said.

“Until we have something more effective, we need nets protecting our beaches.”

Neil says the Mayor is wrong in saying he speaks for the whole Byron community.

“There are plenty of locals who believe saving a human life is more important than the collateral damage of other species being also caught in the nets,” he said.

Mayor Simon Richardson has said that while shark mesh nets are currently being using in Queensland and around Sydney in New South Wales, shark nets are non-selective and don’t only catch sharks, but also an assortment of non-target marine life including whales, dolphins, turtles and rays.

“Placing traditional shark nets along the North Coast will pose a threat to at least 10 species of whales and dolphins that migrate or live year-round in the region.
“These include the resident bottlenose dolphins, vulnerable Australian humpback dolphins, endangered southern right whales and threatened humpback whales.”
