LAST YEAR’S semi-finals losers, Melville Rugby Club, from the Hamilton region in the North Island, comprehensively beat Fijian team Nadro Navosa 33-0 in the Finals of Byron Bay Rugby Club’s 2016 Sevens competition on Sunday October 16.

Byron Rugby Club committee member, Paul Waters, said this year’s event was one of the best events run by the club, if not the best.

He said the club has been running the annual Rugby Sevens competition for twenty-seven years, and it just keeps getting stronger.

“It’s a fantastic event for Byron because it’s on when nothing else is on – it brings people to town who spend around $1 million every year,” Paul said.

Paul also said the women’s section of the comp was a real crowd-pleaser.

“Although the Women’s comp has been running for a long while, there’s been much more interest in it since our Australian Women’s Rugby team won gold at the last Olympics,” he said.

“The Byron Rugby Committee enjoys tremendous support from Byron Bay businesses, for which they are very grateful. The money we make from the Sevens competition funds the club for the rest of the year.”
