VOICE of BYRON regular, Dave Bryant‎, was at the fire at Tallow Beach on Saturday night September 16 and again early next day.

Dave says, “There was a small confined forest fire at Tallow Beach, at the inlet of Ti Tree Creek last night.

“Three fire trucks attended at 11pm.

“I walked to the location this morning and it had reignited, so we called the fire brigade and they are back again now.

“The southerly wind has sprung up too.

“It’s on the southern side of the creek so without a 150m long hose it’s hard to douse the fire. The boggy shallows around the bank make it difficult to access unless you’re wearing wetsuit booties!

“They believe illegal campers or backpackers had a fire on the beach which led to this larger fire.

“One fireman said to me at midnight last night, “If there was a stiff northerly wind, the whole forest would have been alight.”

“Fortunately it was a calm evening but as you’ll see from the photo this morning, with a wind gust of 40kph anything is still possible.

“Thank goodness for the firefighters – attending the fire at midnight and up again at 6am.

“Anyone who lives on the edge of Tallow Beach would know how dry the forest is. Thank goodness it wasn’t worse.”

Good work to all involved. We attended at 11pm and got it controlled only to find another group of individuals lit a bonfire again on the beach shortly after. Please people be responsible.
