Byron Shire Council Creates Jobs to Keep Byron Kids Local

Random youth trainy-looking shot to go with this good-news article.

Byron Shire Council wants to kick start the careers of some of our brightest young people with a traineeship or full-time job in Local Government.

Council currently has its largest number of trainee positions available, with an unprecedented six new positions up for grabs for school leavers, University students and graduates in areas including Engineering, Building Surveying, Administration, Records Management, Community Enforcement and Environmental Health.

Kylie Armstrong, Council’s Manager People and Culture, said it was an exciting time for many young people and gaining skills and training in a dynamic Local Government workplace opens up a rewarding and meaningful career path.

“We want to stop the flow of young people from this area because they can’t find work or career opportunities,” Ms Armstrong said.

“Working in Local Government is very satisfying as you’re working with the community at a grass roots level on projects that impact directly on people’s lives and you can really see how your work makes a difference,” she said.

“It can be difficult to find career opportunities and this is one way Council is investing in better jobs and outcomes for our young people.

“What is fantastic about the opportunities currently available is that there are no prior professional skills necessary for most of the roles we are advertising – Council is offering to train and educate new staff.

“The jobs are primarily aimed at school leavers and university graduates and we also have a position for a student who is part-way through their Engineering degree at University,” Ms Armstrong said.

“The variety of career opportunities in Local Government is extraordinary and at Byron Shire Council we have so many talented staff who have immense knowledge and experience so it’s a great opportunity for people to get trained and skilled and kick start a career,” she said.

Information about the jobs available are on Council’s website, www.byron.nsw.gov.au or our Facebook page to hear from one of our trainees.
