BYRON SHIRE Council staff are in Byron Bay’s main street this week to talk to people about their ideas for improving walking, cycling and traffic in the Byron Bay town centre.

The feedback from the community and businesses will be used to inform an Access and Movement Study and Strategy that was identified as a priority in the Byron Bay Town Centre Masterplan.

Byron Shire Council’s Manager, Environmental and Economic Planning, Sharyn French, said that access and movement in the town centre was a major concern for people during public consultation for the Masterplan.

“When we spoke to the community they told us they were frustrated about traffic congestion, a lack of pedestrian and cycling access and public transport,” Ms French said.

“When Council developed the Byron Bay Town Centre Masterplan traffic was identified as the biggest issue for the town centre and the Access and Movement Strategy will look at ways we can improve the street and pathway networks,” she said.

Specialist traffic and movement consultants, MRCagney, have been engaged to look at the way people of all ages and abilities move around in Byron Bay and Council has organised a series of pop up studios and community presentations to get people’s ideas.

“We are hoping people will take the time to stop and chat about their views on improving how people walk, ride and drive around Byron Bay’s town centre,” Ms French said.

People are invited to drop-in and share their ideas at a pop up studio near The Northern Hotel on Jonson St between the following times:

  • Thursday 20 July – 9.30am to 4.30pm
  • Friday 21 July – 9.30am to 4.30pm
  • Saturday 22 July – 9am to 12noon

Two community presentations and workshops will be held at the Byron Bay Community Centre on:

  • Thursday 20 July from 5.30 to 7.30pm
  • Saturday 22 July from 10am to 12pm

Fixing potholes doesn’t fix the congestion issues.
More people walking or cycling instead of driving will allow people to avoid traffic & parking problems, leave people with more money to spend in shops instead of on petrol, be better for their health, better for the environment & mean fewer cars causing potholes.
