BYRON BAY Paid Parking campaigner Paul “Macca” McCartney has come out against a recent Byron Shire Council decision to restrict the town’s share of paid parking revenue to just 50%.

Council’s resolution also includes provision for revenue distribution to be reviewed should other towns in the Shire implement paid parking.

Macca posted a photograph in Facebook with the caption “This is why we need all the parking meter money in Byron you wouldn’t find this in Brunswick or Bangalow yet they will get all their parking metre money fair go for Byron.”

Macca also intends to mount a petition and pursue further action to protest Council’s decision.

Councillors voting against the decision included Paul Spooner, who believes the Shire needs a unified wayto disburse paid parking revenue equitable.

As Deputy Mayor in 2016, Cr Spooner gave repeated assurances in Voice of Byron that 100% of revenue raised in Byron Bay would be spent in Byron Bay.

It must be incredibly frustrating for him now, to have his fellow Councillors break his promise, through no fault of his own.

Mayor Simon Richardson said the 50% share would really end up being closer to 65% of revenue because some of the revenue would be generated from crown Reserve Land.

He also said it was important that ByronBay parking revenue be distrbuted equitably across the whole Shire.

Not true Macca, you will find exactly this in Bangalow and many other parts of the Shire. Byron Bay needs to stop seeing itself as an individual entity. You are part of a Shire. We all pay. Rates , parking, fees and charges all going into the Shire Council purse to be distributed across the Shire as needed. Byron Bay isn’t the only town in this Shire but has consistently sucked up the majority of revenue for years. It time this was stopped.
