BYRON BAY’S Mark ‘Mono’ Stewart has retained his world adaptive surfing crown.

The 54-year-old took out the AS-2 stand-kneel division at the world championships in California Dec 11.

Mono said victory was even sweeter the second time around.

“Last year was amazing because it was the inaugural year and to win that was great, but this year was like a family reunion to get everyone back together,” he said.

“There were lots of young people this year which is such a good thing, you know, to get the youth back and involved in adaptive surfing.

“What we want to do now is really develop our juniors … and if I can be part of that I’ll be stoked.”
