Byron Bay Memorial Rec Grounds Under Threat Again

THE BYRON BAY Memorial Recreation Grounds are once again under threat. Continuing its don’t-care attitude towards any form of memorial to those who gave their lives at war, Council reportedly wants to claim the Rec Grounds for a permaculture farm.

Helen Watson has brought it to our attention in Facebook.

Helen says, “Byron Council wants to remove or curtail sporting clubs using the gounds. Some of these clubs have used the grounds for 100 + years. and would also impact on the Byron Bay Primary school.

“These grounds belong to the community.

“Why does Council want our Rec Grounds? Is it so that they can create revenue by using it for commercial use?

“This is so wrong in so many ways none more than this is a sacred site: in 1896 it was gazetted as a Memorial park in memory of the armed services WW1 and WW2 who fought and died for our freedom. The grounds were completed by the returned service people. All by hand labour.

“Submissions against this plan close on 21 December so send to: submissions@byronshirecouncil.com.au..

“Have your say.

“Come to the rally “Save our Recreational Fields” Saturday 9 December at 10.am please.”

First it’s Butler St Reserve, now this. Simon Richardson’s grand vision of a European style Town centre with no cars or vehicles is coming in to play! Jan Barham had a vision like this for a permanent home for the writers festival. What we got was a white elephant we are in debt for and still losing money on – the Cavanbah Centre.
Any wonder Rose Wanchap bailed out from his grip.
I am so glad I had a go at Council elections. Our Council is owned by the NSW Greens and Country Labour. They don’t give a shit who lives here, they just want a power base.
Money for zebra striped street with walking fish.
A fortune for Council BUILDING BETTER ROADS SIGNS
Two trees down for the piazza style restaurant Old Byronian .
$500,000 to do up Railway Park, half to be paid from our rates.
Can we get some bean counters on Council because the Green sector we have obviously can’t add up.
Permaculture farm! Must be owned or run by one of the Councilors mates, How else would you come up with such a Lame idea
Well the next election won’t be a landslide at this rate.

Omg leave it! Stop making my home town so uninviting. Stop being money hungry. The top pub is stuffed, too posh for Byron… in Byron the prices of food, rent, buying houses, business rent, it’s all money hungry. Just stop. Now you want to take away where memorial services are held for the diggers. Next you’ll be wanting to pull the pool out an put accommodation. Just stop, you’re wrecking the town. I don’t like going home these days, it’s just not Byron. Too many rich people and backpackers have moved in. I was born in Byron Bay in the hospital that’s not even there any more. Can’t even show my daughters where they were born either. Council, where’s your care button? Oh no that’s right, it’s a money button now. You’re a joke. And Woolworths in Byron is the most expensive Woolworths in Australia. Take the fancy shops out they’re not Byron. STOP TRYING TO MAKE MONEY! IT’S JUST GREED. KARMA WILL GET YOU ALL ONE DAY. JUST PUT BYRON BAY BACK HOW IT WAS BEFORE HOGAN AND STROP CAME IN. I COULD GO ON AND ON BUT I KNOW YOU WON’T CHANGE. I MISS MY OLD BYRON.
