ONE IN 63 Australian school children has a formal autism diagnosis. So why is this disorder still so misunderstood?

Bond University here on the Gold Coast is home to the Centre for Autism Spectrum Disorder, where research is being done to better understand and treat children living with it.

And this week, they are offering free workshops and talks for educators and parents as part of research week.

Nicole Dyer caught up with the head of the centre, Vicki Bitsika, as well as two mums who have turned to the centre for help.

Their stories are confronting and more common than you realise.
