THE BANGALOW Weir is looking for more rocks for its upcoming restoration works.
If you have unwanted rocks stockpiled on your property that you would like to donate to the project, give Byron Shire Council a phone call on 6626 7158.
Byron Shire Council engineer James Flockton said the rocks need to be 250mm to 800mm in size and located at properties within 25 kilometres from Bangalow.
“Many local properties clear rocks during building site works or leveling paddocks for slashing.
“If you have some rocks that you don’t need, let me know about them and we will come out and check to see if they are suitable.
“The less we spend on purchasing rocks, the more we can spend on beautification works such as plantings, picnic benches and painting,” he said.
The weir restoration includes fixing the old swimming platform and using rocks to reinforce the side walls and create rock pools that support fish habitat and the natural environment.
“Once we have the materials secured, we are aiming to start the work no later than November when the creek level is likely to be low,” Mr Flockton added.
The Bangalow Weir restoration program is a collaborative program between the Bangalow Parklands team and Byron Shire Council.
Funding is being provided with a $100,000 grant from the state government’s NSW Environmental Trust’s Restoration and Rehabilitation Program and $50,000 from Byron Shire Council.
