Voice of Byron regular, Michael Krilich, shared his thoughts on the anniversary of Steve Gilpin’s death after a traffic accident near Mullumbimby in 1992.
Mick says, “On January 6, 1992, Steve Gilpin, the vocalist for Mi Sex, died after a severe car accident near Mullumbimby, in Northern New South Wales left him in a coma in Southport, Queensland. Steve was 42.
“Mi-Sex originated in New Zealand and were active from 1977 to 1986.
“The band name is adapted from an Ultravox track, “My Sex”, from that group’s debut album, Ultravox! .
“The original band was by Steve as vocalist, Kevin Stanton as guitarist/songwriter and Don Martin on bass.
“Their famous single “Computer Games” went to the TOP of the charts in October 1979 in Australia & No. 5 in New Zealand.
“Their debut album, Graffiti Crimes that reached No. 6 in New Zealand and the top 20 in Australia was issued in July 1979 to coincide with their national tour supporting Talking Heads.
“Mi-Sex have reformed a few times over the years and again recently for a minor tour.”
