Railway Track Land Used to Add New Parking to Byron CBD

LEASED OR SOLD? Photo clearly shows the old railway track ending and 2-hour parking beginning behind Woolies, Jonson Street, Byron Bay.

WHETHER ADDING new parking spaces to the Byron Bay CBD is an effective parking strategy or not, it’s already happened in Byron Bay.

The railway track behind the Woolies Plaza, just south of the Railway Friendly Bar, has been turned into quite permanent-looking 2-hour parking.

The paving is certainly permanent enough to begin showing potholes, sadly an icon of Byron Bay and the Shire.

The signage indicates it is controlled – either leased or owned, and certainly controlled – by Woolies.

The only reference to the approximately 100-vehicle parking space we could quickly find was a story in the Echo in August 2016 which says the railway track was tarred for Mercato to use in developing their new complex in the south of the Plaza.

But the Mercato development, although very quiet the day we visited, seems to have plenty of its own land available for parking.

In any case, current signage at the parking site leaves no doubt that as of July 2017 when our photos were taken, the land is now controlled by Woolies.
