THE ISSUE of sharks in our local waters is the hot topic of the day. But recent ‘either/or’ polls don’t do justice to an issue as complex and multi-faceted as shark control. This one gives you more scope. Vote now!
A big picture solution also needs to be applied in this instance. The rising shark population on our coastlines is an indicator of an environmental imbalance caused by overfishing and oceanic degradation from pollution.
I strongly oppose culling and nets, in my opinion this is a short sighted human-centric focus that will only serve to exacerbate the problem. The occasional human tasted and spat out by a hungry shark does not warrant us putting more rubbish in the sea that will kill marine life. If it is death that is being feared here then why do we continue to sanction the use of cars?
Our ocean supports lifeforms which deliver 70% of our oxygen. The health of our oceans requires a swift course of action globally. Imagine the systemic shake up a deliberate 5 yr moratorium on commercial fishing would cause? Or? …
