Council Smoke Free Byron Beaches Campaign Aims to Save Marine Animals

IF YOU’VE been to Byron Bay’s Main Beach lately you may have seen one of Council’s new signs which are part of the Smoke Free Byron Beaches campaign, designed to reduce litter, particularly cigarette butts, on the beach.

Leading the Smoke Free Byron Beaches project is Kate Akkerman, Waste Education and Compliance Officer, who comes to Byron Shire Council from the Positive Change for Marine Life group.

Mr Mayor: “Save Public Parking Along Seven Mile Beach Road”

A PETITION has been launched by a Byron Bay local, directed at the Byron Shire Council Mayor Simon Richardson, and challenging Council’s decision to close Seven Mile Beach Road to the public.

Byron resident Stephen Booth says the petition must have resonated with the community, because there were 300 signatures on board in less than three hours.

Mayor Says Seven Mile Beach Car Parks Lost Only a “Handful of Spaces”

BYRON SHIRE Mayor Simon Richardson says changes to parking at Seven Mile Beach at Broken Head are aimed at stopping illegal camping and protecting the sensitive environment at Seven Mile Beach.

Cr Richardson claims suggestions that this action has been taken to improve the amenity of local residents are baseless, despite a statement by Shannon Burt, Council’s Director of Sustainable Environment and Economy, in which she says there have been discussions with 30 Seven Mile Beach Road residents.

Mullumbimby Public School Wins Waste Wise Schools Challenge

MULLUMBIMBY PUBLIC School is the winner of Byron Shire Council’s 2017 Waste Wise Schools Challenge, recognising excellence in waste avoidance and recycling.

The school received a $1000 prize from Byron Shire Mayor, Simon Richardson, at a celebration event at the Council Chambers.

ICAC Warning Behind Byron Council’s Termination of Bike Hire Lease

BYRON SHIRE Council’s General Manager, Ken Gainger, said he was disappointed that its efforts to help a ‘start-up’ solar-charged, electric bike hire company have been misconstrued. 

At its meeting on the 23 November Council agreed to terminate the lease of the business which was operating from a relocatable ‘pod’ at the First Sun Caravan Park at Byron Bay.

Byron Shire Achievements Exceed Traditional Council Expectations

Byron Shire Council’s General Manager, Ken Gainger, said the 2016/17 Annual Report highlighted the operations of Council which go well beyond the traditional areas of rates, roads and rubbish.

Road reconstruction, recycling, flood recovery and roundabouts were significant projects delivered in the last financial year by Byron Shire Council.
