Pokies to be Removed from Byron’s Beach Hotel

ECHONET Daily’s Paul Bibby brings us landmark news from Byron Bay’s Beach Hotel. The pub is set to become the first licensed venue in the Shire to get rid of its pokies in a bid to reduce problem gambling.

In a move that anti-gambling advocates hope will inspire other local venues, the incoming owners of the hotel have pledged to start shutting down its 15 machines from the moment they officially take over on February 26.

Byron Shire Council Seeks NSW Gov’t Briefing on North Byron Parklands

BYRON SHIRE Council is inviting NSW Department of Planning staff to brief staff and Councillors about the development application (DA) for the permanent use of the North Byron Parklands Cultural Events site for events catering for up to 50,000 patrons.

The DA, which is classed as State Significant Development by the NSW Government, is currently on exhibition for public comment.

Warnings & Fines to Protect Child Safety at Byron Shire Schools

BYRON SHIRE Council’s Director Sustainable Environment & Economy, Shannon Burt, said parking officers will be at local schools next term, issuing warnings and fines.

Parents dropping off and picking up children at school are reminded to use the designated school parking areas to maximise safety for the entire school community.

A NAKED man has smashed a police car windscreen with his head, in one of several recent violent arrests, linked to illicit drug use.

Police say drugs like crystal methamphetamine are to blame and have warned residents against their harmful effects.

Valentine’s Day Mulumbimby Bridge Closure for Flood Gauge Repairs

MULLUMBIMBY’S FEDERATION Bridge will be closed to traffic for three hours on Valentine’s Day, 14 February so the flood gauge can be repaired.

The flood gauge is important because it gives people a clear indication of the level of flood water and this allows people to make important decisions about the potential impact on their properties or access to their homes.

Byron Shire Recycled Water Scheme One of State’s Leaders

BYRON SHIRE Council enters 2018 as one of the State’s leaders in effluent management. While it’s not normally something that gets talked about in the Byron Shire, what’s happening is pretty impressive.

Recycled water is now being pumped into a lot of places in Byron Bay including public toilets as part of the Byron Bay Urban Recycled Water Scheme (BBURWS).
