BYRON SHIRE Mayor Simon Richardson has said the announcement of $130,000 in NSW Government funding for the North Byron Shire Floodplain Risk Management Study and Plan is welcome news.
“This plan will allow Byron Council to essentially look at the flood risk in the northern part of the shire and determine how we manage and prepare for future floods.” Mayor Richardson said.
“It will look at options for flood mitigation works and identify areas that are not appropriate for future development.

“The plan includes the urban areas of Mullumbimby, Billinudgel, South Golden Beach, Ocean Shores, New Brighton and Brunswick Heads,” he said.
“We applied for this funding last year, and given the huge impact of the March flood, this grant has come at just the right time,” he said.
“Byron Shire Council will be contributing $65,000 to the plan which, when completed, will allow staff to make informed decisions on how to best reduce the impact of flooding in the Brunswick River catchment.
Byron Shire Council staff will now prepare a tender document for the project and meet with the recently approved committee which will oversee this project.
It is expected a consultant will be appointed to begin work before the end of the year.
