EVERY YEAR young people in programs at Mullum Cottage participate in the Dolphin Dreaming program at the Byron Bay Lighthouse.
In a session this year, the girls’ group heard Delta Kay describe life for the traditional owners of the land as she was growing up in the Shire, how we preserve and protect the Land, it’s birds and animals, how we take care of country.
“It’s such a great day, always a little bit different but always fun, informative and interesting.”
The program was followed by a visit to the YAC and a special treat of lunch in town.
In the October edition of the Byron Youth Service newsletter, it also says a new pilot program for Year 8 boys from Mullumbimby High has commenced.
“So far going really well, excellent attendance, participation and behaviour.”
“The Year 9 girls group has started a Papier-mâché project on creating different models of ‘family’, a learning curve for us all but I’m sure will have interesting outcomes. We also welcome some new girls into the program.
“Next term we will be running some exciting new programs: Eating Out of Home / how to make quick, inexpensive and nutritional meals, yoga and music and an indigenous led girls group called Nalia Dubay (an Aboriginal language name for group of girls).
“Assistance is also being given to young people who have decided to leave school and enter the workforce, engage in apprenticeships, enrol in TAFE courses and in the upcoming Hospitality & Events Management course at the YAC.”
