INDIGENOUS DRAWINGS are being sought for a new language book to be created for local children.
Byron Shire Council is reaching out to local Aboriginal artists to help support a Bundjalung language program and has $200 per artwork in funding available.
Council’s Aboriginal Projects Officer, Belle Arnold said her latest project will see a colouring in book to help Jarjums [all our children] learn the Bundjalung language.
“Our region is very fortunate that we have many Indigenous artists to source some amazing drawings to feature in the book.
“The project is designed to help revitalise Bundjalung language through a resource aimed at local children.
“Creativity and play is a fundamental way children learn.
“Bringing together language through local artwork will help young people connect with our local culture and keep alive the Bundjalung language for generations to come,” she said.
Closing date for the artworks is Wednesday 31 August.
If successful, the artists will be paid $200 for each artwork for the life of the colouring-in book.
Artists can submit more than one artwork. Black and white drawings preferred.
Artwork themes for the colouring in books:
- Animals
- Plants
- Actions
- Place names
- Things or activities that children can relate to
- Greetings
- Human Body – head, hands, feet etc.
Artworks will be submitted to a selection panel made up of local Aboriginal elders, community leaders and artists.
