Voice of Byron and KWIMABB regular, Leisha Lowe, is working on a history of Watego’s Beach and asks for input from any locals who have stories, memories or photos.
Leisha says, “I’m interested in hearing from anyone who lived in, or was part of, the Watego’s community in the early days from the 1950’s onwards.
“I am researching this as part of an upcoming book and your memories and photographs could form a valuable contribution towards preserving the history of this beautiful part of the coast.”
I remember the track to the house was over grown and we had to walk from the pass via the cliff edge. I went to Byron bay public school then to high school via train
I remember playing on my grandfather’s banana farm, my father and uncles and grandfather chipping around the banana trees, us kids playing around the trees.
Us kids would play on the beach, walk around the cape and up to the lighthouse than down to Tallow Beach. We walked around everywhere, we would dig up some pippies out of the sand and eat them when walking along Tallow Beach.
During the whaling season us kids would go up to the jetty where the whales were drag up the slipway and onto a carriage than taken to the whaling station to be cut up.
