Voice of Byron regular, Stephen Booth, shared with us the Federal Minister for Environment and Energy’s exemption of Great White Sharks from protection along the Northern Rivers of NSW.
Stephen says, “When the shark net issue arose, because Great White Sharks are a nationally protected species, the first hurdle that needed to be crossed was a legal one.
“Recently the federal environment minister released his reasons for using his unique powers to approve the state government’s submission for exemption from that law.
“Makes an interesting read.”
Whatever the politics of the situation, an understanding of the processes involved is always a good start…
The Minister ends the report by saying, “Accordingly, I decided to exempt the State of New South Wales, and those acting on behalf of the State of New South Wales, from the application of these provisions in relation to the trial.”
