Voice of Byron regular, Stephen Booth, composed this open letter to Byron Shire Mayor Simon Richardson regarding the rangers’ .
Stephen’s letter reads:
Public request for information from Mayor Simon Richardson –
Dear Mr Mayor,
Concern is held by long term rate paying residents over current impacts of “travellers camping in vehicles” on public land in the coastal towns of Byron Bay and Brunswick Heads.
This concern has lead to the question being asked – Where are the BS Rangers?
As of today, January 30th 2017, the BSC website states: “There are currently five Rangers employed by Byron Shire Council. They provide 24 hours coverage to the whole of Byron Shire, 365 days per year”.
Mr Mayor, because this statement appears not to match up with the Ranger activities that ratepayers can see, can you please clarify the following:
- How many Rangers currently are there?
- What are the location of their worksites?
- Between which hours do they work?
- What are BSC’s overall plans in regard to improving management of non-compliance with BSC laws and regulations in our coastal towns, including whether BSC (like other shires) has considered the introduction of “on the spot” fines?
Locals in town are an easier target for the Auto Infringement Parking vehicle. As an added inquiry could Council confirm the amount of out of area visitor vehicles booked, the amount of follow up reminders from the Infringement Processing Bureau and Court appearances for non payers, or are Ratepayers filling that gap also.?
