VOICE of BYRON regular, Emma Savill, is concerned that her future in Suffolk Park might be cut short because of Airbnb.
Emma says, “I have been living on my street in Suffolk Park for 9 years. I have always loved the friendly community spirit.
Every year, my street would have a Christmas party where all the neighbours can get together and meet and greet any newcomers to our friendly neighbourhood.

I loved how we all knew everyone on a first name basis and always stopped for a chat while walking to the beach or shops.
9 years ago it was residents only.
This summer, however, I’ve noticed it’s changed dramatically. Every 2nd house is now Airbnb/Holiday letting.
Nobody recognises anyone because faces change on a weekly basis.
I worry for my 5 yr old son when he plays in the street because cars hoon down the road.
I have come to work today (Monday), tired AF because next door’s Airbnb crew were partying until 3.30am. The bass from their music rattled my windows and their shouting/singing woke my son up too.
I called the police who I quote “Were too busy to come and do anything”.
So unfortunately, for the Airbnb guests, they had to deal with the wrath of Emma instead.
My lovely neighbours on the other side have been told to pay an extra $100 p/w rent, or be evicted, because their landlord also wants to start an Airbnb.
This is happening to far too many locals!
Having their rent increased to feed the hunger of the rich!
I’m hoping my landlord doesn’t jump on the ‘rent increase/Airbnb’ bandwagon, otherwise I will have no option but to move out of the lovely town I love so much, which is sad as I work in Byron Bay and my son goes to school here.
