VOICE of BYRON regular, Shaun McDonald shared Hodaddy’s post about the early 1960s at Watego’s Beach.
Hodaddy says, “That is Wategoes Beach in 1961, via Colin Ashford. There are several nice photos of Wategoes showing no houses, minimal houses, the banana farm, then the dirt road into bitumen and of course to where it is now … millionaires only.
“Back in the mid 60s you could get a prime piece of dirt there for $1000.

“I remember one story Bob McTavish told me where he had money in the bank from the USA sales of the Plastic Machine, it was late 60s and the now Rae’s block came up for auction.
“Bob wanted to buy it, had the money, but the surf was on and they missed the auction … surfing down at Lennox.
“He could have scored that bit of dirt for $1500, it is now worth perhaps $10 million.
“If anyone knows Colin on here, please tag him and thanks for sharing the photo on Facebook.”
