VOICE of BYRON regular, Dave Bryant, calls for better signage to help combat illegal camping in Byron’s National Parks and beaches.
David says, “Not sure what your thoughts are about Camping on a Beach in Byron – especially in areas inside a National Park.
Seems the message to international tourists isn’t getting through…

The signage as you enter at Tallow Beach says No Dogs, No Fishing (in the creek) and No Collecting, but it doesn’t say No Camping or No Fires, and I think the signage here needs to be updated…. but as you enter at Ocean Street and other access points it does state this in larger signage…
Now, these 4 young guys were oblivious to the fragile bird sanctuary at Tallow Creek, but I did advise them politely of the birds, and I did ask them to remove all of their garbage too, but we know that so many visitors to this beautiful area seem to ignore the fact they “love” the environment, but carelessly just leave their rubbish for others to clean up.
I am sure these guys did the right thing however.
What are your thoughts on camping on a beach, not just in Byron but anywhere for that matter.
Camping in a National Park is NOT allowed unless sign posted, but it really needs to SAY THIS on suitable signage, especially at a place like Tallow Beach….
This photo shows one of the birds we see daily, not to mention up to a dozen wallabies, beautiful forest and the gorgeous waterway that is Tallow Creek… and just recently I have seen a couple of huge stingrays and metre long flathead in only a foot of water there!
By all means enjoy this amazing place, but please don’t trash it.

Angry… and assumptive… do you know the people that you’ve judged in your comment? If not, any apology would give your pointless comment more weight.
My comment makes a very clear point. The need for over regulation because a greedy few want to capitalise on making money out of what used to be a very special place is not a point that one should self righteously defend. Who are these people I have judged? Should I be afraid of the consequences of daring to right a wrong. A society where over regulation and excessive signage prevails is not a happy cohesive society. It is a society where the few make money and the rest comply, or else!!
One question. Who is Mick og and what does this off the cuff comment of his mean?
I believe all of the signage is a pure blight on the landscape and a constant reminder that we are all treated like a pack of low life’s. The signage is ugly, only recognised by law abiding citizens and a waste of resources.
There should be a contract of entry to the shire that clearly outlines all of the stupid rules and regulations tacked on by an ever increasing bunch of self serving councillors and corrupt developers. I’m sure there would be no difference to the number of people infringing on the petty rulebook.
National Parks used to be about giving access to beautiful places to the public in a controlled environment offering facilities that help people to enjoy and appreciate the natural wonders. If you want to lock off various place to everyone make them a nature reserve that also excludes feral cats dogs and foxes and all vehicles as well.
Byron Bay has allowed itself to be over developed and under appreciated by a bunch of self serving capitalistic few that have spoilt the entire region for an entire generation.
