BYRON SHIRE Council is charging into the future with the installation of its first zero emissions electric vehicle charging station in  Byron Bay on Saturday, 18 February.

All electric vehicles can use the station and go from low to full charge within 30 minutes. Plus, it’s a FREE service!

In leading the charge, the power to the outlet will also be 100 per cent renewable energy from local retailer Enova Energy.

Mayor Simon Richardson excitedly welcomed the initiative and said it was another strong commitment to future proof Byron Shire with savings for the longer term.

“A key barrier to electric vehicle uptake is ‘range anxiety’ or the fear of not being about to get home.

“Having a fast charging station in Byron Bay and hopefully in the other major towns, will help allay those fears and enable people to seriously consider this zero emissions transport option.

“Plus, it will provide a central location at the Byron Bay Library for Council’s electric vehicle to charge up and get back out on the road. A quick charge station will also allow us to add electric vehicles to the Council fleet,” he said.

The electric vehicle charging station launch will run from 9 am to 11 am and everyone is welcome.

Guest speaker on the morning is Giles Parkinson from Renew Economy and Zero Emissions Byron Board member talking about the future of electric vehicles in Australia.

The morning will also have on hand electric vehicles, e-bikes and displays from Enova, Nissan, BMW, Tesla, Sunshine Cycles, Beyond Oil, Zero Emissions Byron and the Byron Bay Library.

The electronic vehicle charging station is a Byron Shire Council funded project and a Zero Emissions Byron initiative to support the ten year zero emissions goal.

Plus, it’s part of the broader Northern Rivers Electric Vehicle Strategy that Byron Shire Council is developing in partnership with Tweed, Lismore and Ballina. The aim of the strategy is to promote regional uptake of electric vehicles to business and the community.
