First up I want to say a big congratulations to my brother Maddog and his mate Plate for doing so much for so many surfers and helping out so many charities by donating product to raise funds around Byron Bay and beyond.

A LATE try to flanker Craig Wallace snatched a memorable 32-31 win for Byron Bay over Wollongbar-Alstonville in Far North Coast Rugby Union at Lyle Park, Wollongbar, on Saturday.

It left a pressure kick for the five-eighth John Laughlin, who had missed all five previous conversions and needed to slot the goal to maintain the team’s unbeaten record this season.

Devils Not Quite Good Enough for Comp Leaders

WINNING becomes a habit. The Evans Head Bombers, an honest but not outstanding team, have acquired it. Byron Bay’s Red Devils have gone cold turkey on it.

Saturday’s NRRRL clash between the two sides at Stan Payne Oval was a classic example of one being able to find a way to victory and the other unable to grasp it when it was virtually in the palm of their hand.

IT WAS another successful trip inland for the Northern Hotel Byron Bay Rams over the weekend taking on fourth place aspirants Lismore Thistles on their home turf.

The Byron Bay Reserves set the pace, with Ben Ahern and Tomas delivering a solid 2-1 win.

HE’S the one-legged surfer making impressive waves on the world stage.Byron Bay’s Mark Stewart is the first world champion of adaptive surfing, a new name for surfers previously known as disabled.

“I hate the word disabled,’’ says Stewart, who lost his right leg to bone cancer at the age of 16.

With the self-deprecating nickname of ‘Mono’, Stewart clearly wasn’t the sort of bloke to sit around feeling sorry for himself.

It was a big day for Australia’s first national title competitors at the inaugural nudie Australia Adaptive Surfing Titles. Cabarita Beach on the NSW north coast was the idyllic location for the event with fun waves and great conditions for the surfers.

The three-day event included an Adaptive Surfers of Australia (ASA) Forum, Adaptive Surfing Coaching Clinic and a day of competition surfing that decided the Australian Titles.

Mono was one of the standout competitors of the event and easily took out the AS2 division with a heat total of 12.66 to give himself a shot at back to back ISA World Adaptive Titles later in the year when the team travels to California to take on the rest of the world.

All of a sudden, the threat of the wooden spoon looms larger than the prospect of a finals berth for the Byron Bay Red Devils.

Undaunted, however, by the boys’ leaky journey through the troubled waters of NRRRL Season 2016, and ignoring the inclement weather, an estimated 2,417 hardy souls turned up to support the Bay on Sunday in their clash with the Casino Cougars.
