Pay or Go Away: No Free Camping in Byron Shire

Byron Shire Council continues to grapple with illegal camping. Each night it is estimated there are approximately 120 – 160 campervans in car parks around the Shire, particularly near the beach, as well as in residential streets 

Byron Shire Council’s Director Sustainable Environment and Economy, Shannon Burt, said illegal camping is an issue all-year round but it gets worse during the school holidays and summer months.

Man and Woman Charged After Man’s Ear Partially Bitten Off

A MAN and woman have been arrested following an alleged assault of another man where he ear was partially bitten off in Byron Bay early this morning.

About 12.30am (Sunday October 8), the man and woman were walking along Jonson Street when they became involved in an altercation with a 26-year-old man known to the pair.

‘Crazed’ Dog Attacks Tourist on Byron Shire Beach

POLICE ARE searching for the owners of a ‘crazed’ German shepherd that attacked a US tourist jogging at a popular Byron Shire beach.

Maya Kidan said the dog, which is believed to belong to a couple in their 60s, latched onto her right buttock shortly after 2.30 pm Friday at New Brighton Beach, just north of Brunswick Heads.

Byron Bay Markets: Get With It. Change is Inevitable.

This Byron News photo shows youngest Australian Chamber of Commerce president (at the time) John Wright and his sister Julie, working the donuts stall at the Byron Bay Markets in Apex Park, Byron Bay, in the early 1970s.

YESTERDAY’S VOICE of Byron article highlighted the resistance to change by those against relocating the Byron Bay Community Markets.

But they ignore the fact that the markets are currently in the Butler Street Reserve as the result of change.

$254,000 to Protect Koalas Throughout Byron Shire

PROTECTION OF koalas and improving their habitat will be a primary focus of Byron Shire Council over the next three years thanks to $140,000 in grants from the NSW Government through its Environmental Trust and the Saving our Species program.

Clare Manning, Byron Shire’s Biodiversity Officer, said the grants will be supported with a $114,000 contribution from Council and will fund the Byron Habitats Corridors project.
