DESPITE a singing protest in the Council Chambers and vociferous opposition during a marathon public access session, Byron Shire Council voted on Wednesday to send the controversial Coastal Zone Management Plan (CZMP) – Byron Bay Embayment through to the State Minister for certification and final approval.

Members of the Community Alliance for Byron Shire (CABS) packed out the chamber and serenaded the councillors with their song ‘Wise Men Don’t Build Houses on Sand’ after the vote was taken with Councillors Cubis, Ibrahim, Woods, Hunter and Wanchap voting in favour of the plan.

Tourism Minister to Attend Tourism Symposium at Elements

An upcoming tourism symposium in August at Elements of Byron with the tourism minister will focus on the state of play in tourism, with the minister announcing a new tourism funding model.

The north coast (Newcastle to Tweed) is Australia’s third most popular tourist region after Sydney and Melbourne, with Byron Bay being the region upmost in visitors’ minds.* While overall north coast visitors only grew five per cent last year, CEO of QLD Airports Chris Mills, who is also attending, is expanding the Gold Coast airport and indications are that numbers will increase.

Gold Medal for Byron High Band

BYRON High School’s band came out top of the class at last week’s Murwillumbah Festival of the Performing Arts winning a gold medal in the Under-14’s rock/pop ensembles category.

The band rocked the judges with Adele’s ‘Rolling in the Deep’ and their instrumental version of Deep Purple’s Smoke on the Water.

HE’S the one-legged surfer making impressive waves on the world stage.Byron Bay’s Mark Stewart is the first world champion of adaptive surfing, a new name for surfers previously known as disabled.

“I hate the word disabled,’’ says Stewart, who lost his right leg to bone cancer at the age of 16.

With the self-deprecating nickname of ‘Mono’, Stewart clearly wasn’t the sort of bloke to sit around feeling sorry for himself.

Ballina Greens MP Tamara Smith has lashed out at a new structure at the Cape Byron Lighthouse café describing it as looking like a flying saucer has crashed into the lighthouse.

That’s certainly how it looks in this photograph provided by an Echonetdaily reader, taken from the Byron Bay Surf Club.

The structure is designed to provide undercover seating for about 25 café patrons but Ms Smith says it was illegally constructed and she wants it removed.

The Byron Shire Mayor has announced he has a plan that will see “pop-up housing estates on council-owned land” to combat the rise of housing prices.

The hot real estate market of the mostly coastal electorate of Richmond has been pushing rental prices through the roof.

Planning Panel Approves $10 Million Byron Bypass

CONTROVERSIAL plans for a bypass of Byron Bay’s town centre have been approved.

The independent Northern Joint Regional Planning Panel (JRPP) made a decision on the $10 million application last night.

The bypass will be about 1.3km in length and aims to help cars, cyclists and pedestrians to move around Byron Bay and ease traffic congestion in the town centre.
