SUNDAY 3rd July marked the day when Byron Bayites got a taste of what’s to come over next summer. Traffic congestion between the Pass and the town centre appeared to be as bad as it’s ever been.

Right in the middle of winter. Locals can only imagine what’s to come once the Summer holiday season arrives.

There many comments about Byron Bay’s traffic congestion on Facebook overnight.

Byron GM Gainger’s Rail Corridor Idea

Byron shire’s general manager Ken Gainger has urged locals to look into tapping the potential of Byron Bay’s ‘unloved’ rail corridor for community use, while future proofing it for a return of a rail service.

Mr Gainger wants locals to ‘reimagine a space and take it from unloved and unlock its potential for community use’.

The GM said that ‘in the heart of the Byron Bay town centre, sits a strip of land that could foster creativity, provide a spot to rest, a place to have fun and become a launching pad for emerging local businesses’.

That fixation continued this week when former professional AFL player of the 1970s Allan Sinclair sold his Wategos holiday house, Wattai, for $5.6 million to another Melburnian.

Last-Minute Vote Fails to Derail CZMP

The bid by some Byron councillors to delay the controversial Coastal Zone Management Plan going to the NSW State Government for approval has failed with council staff deeming the motion to re-commit to the vote as having expired at the close of Wednesday’s meeting.

The CZMP has been forwarded to the Minister.

The controversial Coastal Zone Management Plan (CZMP) for Byron Shire was in doubt after a dramatic last minute vote at Wednesday’s council meeting failed to re-commit to approve the plan.

THREE piece Brisbane band Until Home will be making their debut Byron Bay performance to promote the release of their debut EP Optimistic.

After giving Australia a taste of the EP with singles Break my Fall and Every Summer, the full released is packed with catchy hooks and the band’s signature pop-infused rock elements.

The band was formed in mid-2013, but began as an acoustic duo between Matthew Reisinger and Michael Trapp.

Byron CZMP: “I’m Not Dead Yet”

BYRON SHIRE’s Coastal Management Plan (CZMP) has still not been finalised. At the Byron Shire Council meeting of June 29, the motion to adopt the CZMP was passed 5-4.

But in an extraordinary turn of events late in the meeting, the motion was recommitted for further debate.

Councillors Cubis and Ibrahim left the still open meeting early, before it had closed.

Stronger Protections Urged for Broken Head Tea Tree Lake

A push to introduce stronger protections for the Tea Tree Lake north of Broken Head is being headed by Byron Bay-based Nationals MLC Ben Franklin along with local Arakwal leader Delta Kay.

They met on Tuesday with NSW planning minister Rob Stokes at the lake to ask it be placed on a list of the state’s most sensitive lakes.

SEAFOLLY has brought back Aussie supermodel Shanina Shaik for its latest swimwear campaign, conducting a fashion shoot in Byron Bay.

The recent shoot features the Victoria’s Secret runway star in various new season styles.

“It was lots of fun,” Shaik said of the shoot. “Byron Bay has some of the most amazing beaches that I have ever seen.”
