IN AN OBVIOUS display of the old saying “Better to seek forgiveness rather than permission” Byron Shire Council General Manager Ken Gainger has apologized for chopping down trees in Byron Bay’s Railway Park.
Council staff recently removed two trees and a Bangalow Palm from Railway Park in Byron Bay in preparation for imminent Park redevelopment works, a Byron Bay Town Centre Master Plan project funded under a State Government grant and pay parking revenue.
In his apology, Ken says, “In removing these trees without adequate consultation or communication we have underestimated the level of community concern at such action and for this I sincerely apologise.

“I also apologise to our Councillors for any embarrassment that the tree removal may have caused.
“We look forward to working together to deliver a revitalised public space that we can all be proud of.”
Is Gainger the Fall Guy?
I totally agree with Wally Halverson, but I think its time for this manager to also resign. He has become too illustrious. How would we know if he received gifts from the developer of the shops that are benefiting from this tree removal? its all to stinky!!!!!
Anyway you look at it he’s a traitor to the Byron shire and a tree killer! Does he have no understanding of the benefits of trees in the urban environment? I guess not.
Convenient for Gainger to now want to apologise after the fact. The damage has been done (Developers really don’t like trees do they…?

Rural Fire Service – trees are allowed to be removed without permission within 10 metres of a building
Whilst looking at options for the markets to move to, the Mayor and Ken Gainger voiced their enthusiasm at the fact the old Byronian site will be opened up to the park and forming a seated area spilling into the park. Funny how the tree happens to be where the outside dining area will be??? Farmers and developers have tried that old SORRY story in court and still copped a fine.
Fine the GM (Ken Gainger) and put the money toward the landscaping bill.
Then we would know he was sorry!!
