CAPE BYRON Lighthouse and the Broken Head Nature Reserve are two of just three outstanding whale watching platforms on the Northern Rivers

Cape Byron Lighthouse in the Cape Byron State Conservation Area is on the most easterly point in Australia. This spot boasts panoramic views of Byron Bay’s beaches and coastline and is a renowned spot for sightings of turtles, dolphins and whales.

The Broken Head Nature Reserve is just south of Suffolk Park. Its Three Sisters lookout boasts a vantage point from which to view migrating whales, as well as coastal views of secluded beaches, rocky coves, and dense rainforest.

The other whale watching spot is at Iluka.

The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service is encouraging everyone to visit a coastal national park to catch the sight.

NPWS Wildlife Management Officer Geoff Ross said now was the perfect time to head to one of the north coast’s spectacular lookouts, headlands or foreshores to experience a record number of whales enjoying their natural playground.

“The waters off our coastline are currently very busy with whales on their annual migration. Some whales are still making their way northward to the warmer waters off Queensland for breeding, whilst some are already on their southbound journey towards Antarctica, with their new calves in tow,” Mr Ross said.
