Byron Services Club Mexican Mick’s Night Success

THE FIRST Mexican Mick’s Cantina Reunion night held at the Byron Bay Services Club last Saturday 26 July was a runaway success.

People lined up for Mexican Mick’s Cantina delights at the Bistro counter until food ran out around 9pm and the club was filled with patrons reliving memories of dining at the original Mexican Mick’s Cantina in Jonson Street, Byron Bay, back in the 1970s.

Special guest on the night was Mick’s daughter, Cindi.

In her official opening address for the evening, Cindi congratulated the Club, Ray Lawlis and chef David on their brilliant efforts in recreating her father’s signature dishes.

Kris Rummery, former worker at the original Mexican Mick’s Restaurant, had a ball on the night.

“Was a great night… I for one ate so much Mexican, was really nice.

“When we got out of the car all you could smell was the glorious Mexican Mick’s aroma. Well done Ray and everyone else involved.”

Mojo, entertainment for the night, kicked off at 8pm and delivered a night of exceptional 70s rock and roll, as promised.

Club Secretary Manager David Green said he was very pleased with the night.

“In fact, the popularity of the night took us a little by surprise,” David said.

“Demand for the Mexican Mick’s dishes far exceeded what we expected, which put unexpected extra pressure on the kitchen.

“But we’ve ironed out those bugs in the system and we’re confident the next Mexican Mick’s Cantina night at the Club will be even better,” he said.

The night was very successful. Of course, with it being the first night, there always will be small teething problems, which we’ve identified and will be corrected next time.
Congratulations to the kitchen staff, I know you all did a great job, being thrown in at the deep end.
Naturally it is impossible to get everything exact, as a lot of the original ingredients are no longer available.
But we a enjoyed the memories and a great effort by all involved Ray Lawlis
