THIS year the Byron Lighthouse Run is turning 10, and will once again support cancer prevention and diagnosis in the local community, with all funds raised going to Crackin’ Cancer.
Last week a group of supporters and organisers met with Professor Tom Shakespeare, one of Lismore’s top radiation oncologists.
He said working in his field was a “challenge and a privilege”.
“For 10 years now, the Byron Lighthouse Run has given money to cancer causes and this year I am delighted to have captured their whole focus,” Prof Shakespeare said.
“The North Coast Cancer Institute has requested a breast prone board for early detection of breast cancer.
“This board allows patients to receive radiation treatment while lying prone.
“These pieces of equipment are very expensive, but last a long time and allow for a more comfortable and precise treatment for the patients.”
This year Fusion Health, based in Byron Bay, is the run’s major sponsor.
The event has raised more than $121,000 for charities so far in its 10-year history, and is planning to make this year the biggest yet.
