GARLIC IS supposed to keep vampires away but for everyone else this garlic crop is a magnet.

Byron Bay couple Josh and Lynette Dooley have just harvested 500kg of Russian garlic and hope to fetch between $45-55 per kilogram.

It is the second season the Dooleys have planted the garlic at The Farm Byron Bay and this year’s bumper crop is being snapped up as quickly as the bulbs are being pulled out of the ground.

“It is so popular because it can be used in a lot of dishes,” Mr Dooley said. “The cloves are huge so you can use more of it and it’s not so intense of a flavour.

“A lot of Gold Coasters are hitting us up big time and doing day trips down, to check it out.”
