NISHA ABEY is saving the world — one bikini at a time. The Byron Bay local’s Liar the Label range uses materials made from recycled plastic bottles and fishing nets.
Ms Abey, 29, set up the business two years ago to reduce the impact of the fashion industry’s use of chemicals, cheap labour and wasted fabric.
She said her fabrics had a low environmental impact, while also being durable and sun-safe.
“The younger demographic are the ones who really care,” she said.
“So we make (our products) look mainstream and cool … we’re creating basics that are timeless and classic that you can wear again and again.”
Ms Abey also said her clothing was manufactured locally on the Gold Coast to reduce their carbon footprint.
“There’s really good manufacturing there, we pop in and see production, see what’s going on,” she said.
