SPORTING the latest fashions, dining at the hippest restaurants, aspiring model Sara Alida Hughes was living the high life.

By her side, sharing the good times, was Adam Samuel Morgan, a man of interest to police, suspected of being one of Byron Bay’s biggest drug dealers.

But as their relationship collapsed in a web of allegations that included Morgan ramming Hughes’s car and threatening her over the phone, police were closing in on the couple over other matters.

In a coup for local officers, Morgan and Hughes are facing court on separate matters in a case that allegedly exposes the criminal networks that converge in a tourist haven located on a major drug corridor between the Gold Coast and Sydney.

Morgan, 49, a long-time Byron local, and his mate Daniel Paul Smith, 36, a food truck owner, are allegedly at the centre of a drug syndicate police began investigating earlier this year.

They claim both men acted as drug suppliers, orchestrating cocaine deals of up to 1kg at a time.

While the drug squad was investigating Morgan in July, Hughes, 26, came forward with a number of allegations.

Morgan had told friends he was helping Hughes, a woman struggling with drug addiction. But Hughes claimed Morgan had harassed her while the pair were staying at an up-market boutique Byron apartment.

She told police Morgan had tried to run her car off the road.

Local business owners have said that in the days before Hughes came forward, they had seen the elated pair dining out at some of the town’s slickest restaurants.
