Council Seeks Nominations for Byron Shire 2018 Positive Ageing Awards

TO CELEBRATE the contribution our seniors make to the Byron Shire community, Council is calling for nominations for the 2018 Positive Ageing Awards.

Older members of the community not only have wisdom and grace that comes from experience but they have time and love for our shire that sees them donating thousands of volunteer hours for all manner of organisations and causes.

Byron Shire Mayor, Simon Richardson, said seniors set the bar very high when it comes to leading by example with regard to their love of the community.

“This shire may be one of the most popular tourist destinations in Australia, but when you look past the visitors we are a regional area with old-fashioned values like caring for community, looking after our neighbours and getting involved in volunteer organisations to help those who are less fortunate,” Mayor Richardson said.

“Our senior residents are magnificent role models for everyone, and you only have to walk down the streets of Brunswick Heads, Mullumbimby, Byron Bay or Bangalow and poke your head into the local op-shops to see how much older residents give back,” he said.

“I think it goes both ways though – being physically active and socially active in the community keeps people engaged and healthy and we have no shortage of these people in the Byron Shire.

“Our seniors are inspirational – just look at Margaret Fisher, our Byron Shire Senior Citizen of the Year, who is still playing tennis at 87.

“What a great role model she is for everyone in the community.

“I am hoping individuals, or a group, will take the time to nominate someone they admire for the 2018 Byron Shire Positive Ageing Awards,” Mayor Richardson said.

Anyone can nominate someone as long as that person is a Byron Shire resident and over 65 years old.

Nomination forms are available by clicking here, from the Customer Service counter in Mullumbimby, the Byron Community Centre or local libraries.
