THE VOICE of Byron Bay locals concerned about high-handed actions by Byron Shire Council over parking at Seven Mile Beach has forced Byron Shire Council to reverse its decision.
Council voted unanimously at its meeting yesterday Thursday 14 December to remove 20 boulders and over 100 No Parking signs along Seven Mile Beach Road, introducing new signs which will say “No Parking Between 5pm and 9am.”
Action against the boulders and signs was strong locally.

A petition was raised by Tracy Grono and Johnny Abegg, which garnered 2883 signatures in just over two days.
At around one signature every 40 seconds, it was a very strong indication as to just how outraged local residents were at Council’s actions.
Another campaigner, Stephen Booth, thanked Debbie Milgate, Mark “Mono” Stewart, Stuart Watson and Voice of Byron for their efforts in getting Council to reverse its shock decision to effectively privatise Seven Mile Beach Road.
“Without Tracy‘s tireless work in the trenches of BSC bureacracy and John‘s high profile media exposure inĀ Voice of Byron this result could not have been achieved.”
Important questions still remain unanswered as to who authorised the boulders and original signs, and at whose request.
Big waste of money and concerned where the idea came from… and why we funded it.
This is great news, but will those people like myself who have been fined $270,and put through financial stress be reimbursed ?
I call on Byron Shire Council to make good by giving people a refund of their fines and to ask for the NSW Debt Recovery Department to void all fines and halt any that are currently in process.
I am led to believe that the Council Rangers have been over zealous in their policing of the No Stopping signs at Seven Mile Beach writing many scores of tickets over the past few months since the signs went up.
This has been a windfall for the Byron Shire Council.
