BYRON SHIRE Council’s 2017-2018 Works budget funds a spread of activities which attempt to pacify as many people as it can.

And it hasn’t done a bad job of it.

But that’s not what Byron Shire Council should be doing with this budget. The 2017-2018 Shire works budget should be placing all dreams on hold for just 12 months, and dealing with the Shire most dire problem. Roads.

The Labor Party crew said it all yesterday. Shire infrastructure is already overstretched. They’re talking about the Shire’s pitiful roads.

They’re talking about the two pothole fatalities in 12 months.

The Biggest Infrastructure Problem

While it’s plain there are many gaps in what’s needed and what’s provided in the Shire, the biggest problem, by far, is the state of the Shire’s roads.

As part of the Shire’s attempt to pass a “worthiness test” imposed on it by the NSW State Government, Byron Shire has killed off its road maintenance crew and decided to subcontract road maintenance out to Lismore City Council.

This has made the Shire’s roads worse than ever.

The Solution

There is only way to achieve some semblance of normality to the Shire’s roads issue.

• Defer all Dream Work in the budget for 12 months.
• Redirect every cent possible into improving the Shire’s roads.
• There’s $millions available if this happens. And the dreams will till be there for next year’s budget…

Reality needs to trump dreams. For twelve months at least.
