SHARK DETERRENT technology will be expanded along the NSW coastline after the success of a trial on the state’s north coast.
They’re called SMART drumlines because they tell where and when a shark’s been caught and are designed to alert contractors so the shark is tagged and released before it dies.
The government says during a six month trial the drumlines proved five times more effective than mesh nets.
During that time the mesh nets caught just three White Sharks while 25 SMART drumlines caught 31 White Sharks.
As the now favoured technology 50 more drumlines will go into the water at five locations along the NSW coastline.
Ten will be added between Brunswick Heads and Broken Head, adding to the 35 already in use on the Far North Coast.
Another 15 drumlines will be used for research at different locations along the state’s coast.
