THE 8th Australian Marbles Championship were held at Brunswick Heads yesterday as part of the area’s Old and Gold festival.
“I used to love playing marbles when I was a kid and I thought a competition would work in well with the town’s motto of “Simple pleasures” and the annual festival, organiser Mary Ashton said.
Donna McFadden, a teacher at Mullumbimby Public, is a big supporter of the event.
“It is good to encourage old-fashioned games and to get children away from screens,” she said. “A lot of kids turn up with their grandparents’ or parents’ marbles,” she said.
The Brunswick Heads marble competition is one of just three held around the country, Ms Ashton said. If all goes well she would like to take a team to compete at international level in the United States were marbles are a popular activity, she said.
The ‘Finger Bolts’ from Brunswick Heads Primary won the team category, while Jordan O’Hearn won the junior section and Brent Shaub took out the seniors title.
