Voice of Byron regular, Lorraine Scarr, was asked a question by a friend, about calling Byron Bay “The Bay” and seeks input from our members and readers.
Lorraine says, “Just had a comment from a fellow member who said she has never heard Byron Bay referred to as “The Bay.”
“I had mentioned to her that it was what the locals used to call our town, never “Byron.”
“Does anyone else agree ?”
Byron was named for a sea admiral… should have been the poet! (Who was his grandson. ) I love ‘the Bay’ too but only works here. There are a lot of bays on this planet and most of them are cheerfully called ‘the Bay’. Start with San Francisco …oh and notice how many Bay Fm’s there are around the planet!
Yep – definitely ‘the Bay’! Always was- always will be!
Loved Muzz’s comment. Remember using that talk when I lived yp there and I always went to The Bay 😃
Byron is the shire name .The Bay is the towns pet name used by its close friends if you must shorten byron Bay then go The Bay if people get confused and ask which Bay …..well do they really matter .? i am now crawling back into my cave for another 12 months or untill i feel the need to comment further.Love all you Bayites out there…..sorry Muzz loved your journey down the coast been there and still doin that
Myocum Billinudgel, just down da road from the Tweed come down past Jenners Corner past Murbar over da Range down through Mooooball past Brunz drop into Uncle Toms outside of Mullum down da Tyagarah Straight turn left at Ewingsdale Crossing over da Belongil bridge and you in da Bay!Byron! well if you’re from here your home and you can call it what you like but please don’t call us Bayittes.
Keep it “The Bay”, that’s the way I know it!
Agreed. My father was born here in 1917 and he always referred to Byron Bay as “The Bay”. Never Byron. Same for all locals born and bred.
Yeah and the Belongil was known as struggle town.
If you were born here pre 2000 you are a true byronian and are recognised by the true locals.
