Voice of Byron regular, Lorraine Scarr, was asked a question by a friend, about calling Byron Bay “The Bay” and seeks input from our members and readers.

Lorraine says, “Just had a comment from a fellow member who said she has never heard Byron Bay referred to as “The Bay.”

“I had mentioned to her that it was what the locals used to call our town, never “Byron.”

“Does anyone else agree ?”

Byron was named for a sea admiral… should have been the poet! (Who was his grandson. ) I love ‘the Bay’ too but only works here. There are a lot of bays on this planet and most of them are cheerfully called ‘the Bay’. Start with San Francisco …oh and notice how many Bay Fm’s there are around the planet!

Agreed. My father was born here in 1917 and he always referred to Byron Bay as “The Bay”. Never Byron. Same for all locals born and bred.

Yeah and the Belongil was known as struggle town.

If you were born here pre 2000 you are a true byronian and are recognised by the true locals.
